This Spring I focused on SEO for my Shopify website. At first, I had named all my products something really cute. I loved it, but when I finally got around to doing SEO a year after I opened my Shopify store, I found out that cute names aren’t searched for.
You don’t go to google and type in adorable names for products you don’t need. You go to google and search for the simplest term you can think of about your problem, or maybe you ask the long white box a question.
I had about 100 products when I started finally doing SEO.
One cool thing about having 100 products is that I have a lot of products.
A week ago I searched Google for “site:mydomain” to see how many pages it knew about since I started “doing SEO”, and much to my chagrin, there were only two. I think my homepage and “collections” Or maybe “contact”.
But I just checked it again, and Google now knows about 119 of my pages! Fuck yeah!
But it says “crawled-not indexed”. Well, that doesn’t sound good.
I did some digging.
“Crawled — currently not indexed” is a status on Google Search Console. It means a Googlebot crawled your site but didn’t index it so it won’t appear in Google Search yet.
So, that’s my new mission. Did I know last week when I was checking on the SEO for my Shopify website that Googlebots could crawl, but choose not to index? I did not. Did you?!
So step “next!” of SEO For Shopify Website is … Find out why Google would not index. The top of my search is an add to “Try Google Search Console. So I guess I’ll go see what that’s all abut.
I’ve noticed that my ranking for one of my keywords jumped up 75 places! It’s pretty neat. Because I have so many pages, I chose a keyword to go after for my over-arching keyword. I was able to see my own website on page 1 of Google for a short tail keyword I tried ranking for(two words —>> so cool!), and I’m at 26 for a medium tail keyword (three words).
So even though Google says it won’t appear in search results, I also kinda SAW it in search results, so I’m going to just keep moving forward with this.
What is the Difference Between Crawling and Indexing?
Crawling is the process that Googlebots go through to decide what to index.
There are four stages of search (**link — https://searchengineland.com/search-stages-crawling-rendering-indexing-ranking-387057 **) that you need to know about in order to make the most of SEO for a Shopify Website.
1. Crawling
2. Rendering
3. Indexing
4. Ranking
So if you want to “rank” for a keyword, first you’ll need to be crawled, rendered, and indexed.
Okay.
So, I can see that SEO for Shopify Website is going to be a long game.
But you know what? So is building a business for someone else.
At least this one is mine.
See ya.
