How to Organize a Small Home Office is one thing I’ve struggled with during my Ikea-Target-Amazon days.
I always thought I’d be into the Vanlife Vibes or a Tiny House Communities. Like, if I met myself in real life, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was my thing.
I ended up in a PRETTY SMALL HOUSE instead. It has no closets. A tiny bedroom. An even tinier “side-room”, and a super-cool living room / mud room / kitchen / eatery / plant room combo. It is long and skinny and my home office is **gets out measuring tape** 100″ X 92″. (Roughly 8.5′ x 7.5′)
PRETTY SMALL.
In a perfect world, this would be the size of my closet. But, like I mentioned … there are NO CLOSETS here. (Pardon my yelling.)
I’ve spent hours strolling through magazine-inspired Ikea displays. And I’ve spent hours setting up furniture with those IDIOTIC Allen wrenches. I’m sure you have, too. We’ve all fallen prey to obnoxiously lw pricing.
Want to invest in satisfaction instead of frustration? Me too.
If you’re needing to how to organize a small home office like a genius, please hear this tip loud and clear:
I buy my home office furniture from Ballard Designs, and you can, too. This is a refer-a-friend style affiliate link where I earn a little bit towards my next Ballard Designs purchase. AS an affiliate marketer, it’s kinda the worst type of affiliate program, but the office furniture from Ballard Designs is solid.
10/10 would recommend.
Fully Assembled Home Office Furniture is my love language.
Purchase a chair that allows your feet flat on the ground at 90% in a proper seating position. Ergonomics are important.
You’ll never have enough space with a laptop. You’ll need something else and it will take up too much space and there will be so many chords. One hill I will die on for new entrepreneurs is to use a full-size monitor when you’re planning how to organize a small home office.
I’m a fan of the 24″iMac but you do whatever you want. You can’t do your best work from a laptop on the couch. You just can’t.
It’s hard to work in a small home office, but if the lighting is causing shadows from above no matter where you sit, you’ll get distracted and aggravated often.
Invest in setting up lighting that lights your space the way you need it to.
I find it easier to work on as light a background as possible.
I’m just going to come right out and say it!
I like an L-Shaped desk.
But in a small room? Agh! Impossible!
Or is it?
My favorite desk hack for small bedrooms is the final tip for this how to organize a small home office blog post.
Use Shelfing brackets and a Shelf to create an L-Shaped desk that is thinner than normal office furniture.
Shelving brackets come in:
You can find wood for shelving in many price points. It could be mdf shelving, polar, walnut, or a crazy cool live edge slab. Creative shelving at desk height can give you a great amount of organization in a small home office.
One lovely way I’ve organized my small home office is by putting all of my notes into my favorite app ever, Workflowy! Check it out. I’m always harping on how much I love it. Helps keep my area clutter-free. Paper notes are not ideal for me!
One thing I always wish I would get more into is DIY. I never seem to fixate my new hobby idea on that. Maybe next time.
What are you wanting to try and will you try something new every month with me?
