It takes about 90 days to make any moves using SEO and the first of my SEO Tips for Blogging is to start today. Don’t make a huge plan, not at the start. Not if this is your first rodeo. Just start. There is more to learn by doing than there is to read about. You can’t read your way to a good blog, unless you’re blogging about books.
Look for broad categories with many aspects. For instance, companion planting is a huge category in the gardening topic with hundreds of options for individual blog posts.
What are some open-ended questions your audience is asking about?
Have you ever heard the phrase “give ’em what they want”? In the blogging niche, that means, “say it how they say it”. Seo research helps you write the right sign to show the passersby what you’re about.
When your blog has no clout, you’ll need to go for the low-hanging fruit. As you gain some skills and an understanding of the web you’re weaving, your blog will get a bit better and you’ll be able to get the next level of fruit. Go for long tail keywords with triple-digit searches and green SEO difficulty.
Speaking of fruit, sometimes, when I’m just starting out, I’ll spell something wrong. Tomatos, for instance. If 1000 people a month are asking how to plant tomatos, but no one is helping them, it will be an easier SEO opportunity. Answering easy questions helps pave the way for visitors to trust you with more complicated questions.
I use Notion to set up a system for updating old blogs. I keep a list of all content ideas in my “Blog Post Master” database. It contains all the blogs I write, no matter which brand I’m writing for, in the same list. I can filter and add views for each brand, of course, but it all lives in one space. A Notion database.
My favorite time to update blogs is 10 months after I write it. Long enough to forget, early enough for the same season. My blog post database in notion keeps me on track to update my blogs over time.
If you use WordPress, (hint, hint) you can use the Yoast SEO plugin to keep you on track for good seo.
It will remind you to create internal links, as well as external links. There are some things to remember about each:
Internal links work best when the text of the link is the exact keyword of the blog post slug. Here’ a blog I wrote called “90 Days of SEO Key Words” about seo key words.
External Links will compete with your own authority if you link to something that ranks higher for the same purpose.
Each blog you write helps put your website on the map. It’s easier to rank for keywords if you have 144 pages as opposed to a 5-page website. Not every page or blog post on your website is going to be a big attractor from an organic keyword standpoint. But the blogs that are attracting visitors can help lift up your other blogs.
Your keyword works best as the slug of the blog post or page. You’ll want to repeat the exact same phrase a handful of times, more or less, on each page. It feels unnatural to write. The way I think about it is in terms of browsing your blog post on a phone. I don’t want you to have to scroll to far to remember that this blog post is about seo tips for blogging.
Use your keyword in the slug, the text, h2s and h3s. You’ll want to pay attention to the yoast plugin to check your keyword density. Put it in the meta, too. And rename your image to include it. You got this.
Corroboration is one of the ways people believe you. Corroborate your own website.
The keyword works best as the slug of the blog. The slug is what comes at the end of the URL. In this case, it is seo-tips-for-blogging, which is also the title of my blog post and the H1 Keyword.
After I establish myself on Google a bit, I will get more creative with the titles. Still including the slug, but a little more psychology.
After you’ve written your first blogs, it can be time to start keeping track. I track my progress with my blog branding checklist in Notion.
Are you a Notion person?
Focusing on SEO will help you find your people.
Search Engine Optimization is researching what needs to be written about more.
By writing articles that use words actual humans are actually searching for, you’re making yourself useful. A keyword research tool will show you ways to say things that other people type into the search bar.
So you’re not trying to be clever in your wording while a thousand people are searching for something obvious. Clever isn’t very optimized for searching.
SEO when done correctly, and diligently, will help you find your people just by what they search for, (not for how they look.)
